London Borough of Southwark , Chief Executive
Eleanor started working in Local Government in 1974 and has worked at every level from junior Trainee Accountant to Chief Executive. Her first appointment to a Chief Executive role came in 1999. She has undertaken the Chief Executive role in three London Boroughs: Tower Hamlets, Merton (as a job share) and Southwark.
As part of her role in Southwark she is also the senior officer responsible for regeneration and planning.
Eleanor has senior executive level experience in both public and private sectors, as she spent five years working for KPMG. This public/private perspective is an important aspect of her approach to the challenges of her role.
Recognised by her professional accountancy institute as an expert in organisational management, for a number of years she acted as a national specialist examiner in this subject for the final year professional exams. This interest in organisational structure and culture was one element in her agreeing, in 2013, to take part in Channel 4’s Undercover Boss programme. She credits this experience as being an important catalyst in the culture change that is being achieved across the Council.
Eleanor has held a number of non Executive Directorships, most notably as a trustee of Tomorrow’s People charitable trust and as a non Executive Chairman of the board of directors for a private sector consultancy company. She is currently on the board of the Whitehall and Industry Group and is a parent governor of a special needs secondary school.
